Complete Guide: Hydraulic Auger, Uses and Availability in Kansas

Hydraulic equipment has become the silent backbone of the construction industry. It works on liquid power that generates direct pressure and gets heavy construction jobs done. The technology behind these machines has versatile applicability and is used in large excavators, bulldozers, and cranes. These machines make the process seamless, help optimize productivity, and reduce the time taken to complete a project.

A hydraulic auger is an example of a hydraulic-powered machine. It is not well known amongst laymen but plays a critical role at the beginning of most construction projects. Ranging from the foundations of houses to installing poles, fences, and drains, augers are needed in all tasks.

They are not usually meant to be kept in a home construction tool kit but for rough duty purposes. However, you can find handheld versions of the machine powered by hydraulic pressure that can drill through hard materials like wood.

Thus, in this article, we’ll cover everything related to hydraulic augers - from their functioning and uses to where you can find hydraulic augers in Kansas.

What is a Hydraulic Auger?

A Hydraulic auger is a mechanized and optimized version of a pile driver. It is operated using fluid pressure with a rotation speed of 30-115 rpm. It acts as a drilling machine with more incredible speed and higher power.

As digging and drilling is the first step to installing supportive pillars or laying pipelines, augers find use in any project, small or big.

How Does a Hydraulic Auger Work?

The machine works on the conversion of hydraulic pressure into kinetic energy internally. This energy makes the drilling rig or equipment mount on land directly or on trucks to facilitate digging deeper holes of the desired circumference.

The drill stem is the main component that facilitates the entire process by being the connecting medium between the winch and the cylinder connected at opposite ends of the drill stem. The pressurized liquid in the cylinder is converted into energy through a hydraulic power unit attached to the winch.

It works based on Pascal's Principle, which states that pressure is transmitted everywhere undiminished in an enclosed static fluid. Hence, when the highly pressurized liquid gets converted into energy, it moves the small piston by a significant distance with relatively less force.

Although it may be difficult to comprehend the concept, hydraulic augers prove their value by undertaking tasks like drilling through hard concrete, seabed, and more.

How is a Hydraulic Auger Better than Standard Drilling Equipment?

A Hydraulic auger is an advanced solution that easily tackles the disadvantages of drill bits. Unlike drill bits that require greater pressure yet get clogged due to the dirt being dug, augers offer a competitive edge.

The drill pipe of the auger has a wider diameter, which generates holes of greater depth without much effort. The drilling is also uniform and consistent, allowing further tasks to be done with greater precision.

Where are Hydraulic Augers Used?

Hydraulic Augers have a plethora of uses. Anywhere drilling and installation of objects into hard surfaces is required, a hydraulic auger finds use.

It is commonly used for large-scale construction projects like laying the foundation of a house, setting up the drainage system of a locality, making pits to lay pipelines, and installing poles, street lights, or other systems.

Smaller projects like setting up your home garden or fencing your yard can also be facilitated using the smaller handheld version of a hydraulic auger.

After a turbulent duration of the Covid-19 pandemic, 2022 will be a year of revival and growth in the construction industry. The rising construction costs and labour shortages are challenging the industry to innovate competitive new ideas and make the construction process swifter.

Further, the pandemic has changed the business style of the construction industry - from scheduling and finishing projects to hiring workers and meeting with clients. New technology persists to change the construction site, improve the ability to complete the projects, and increase profit margins. Fortunately, innovations of various robust pile driving equipment are changing the roles of industry professionals and frontline workers.

At Hydraulic Power Systems Inc., the future of construction is always on our minds. Take a look with us at the latest trend that promises to push the boundaries of construction and take the mind-boggling mainstream.

Hydraulic Augers - The Must-Have Construction Equipment

To commence any construction project, digging a hole in the ground is the first and foremost step. Previously, labourers used to dig the holes manually which lead to issues like:

  • Chances of injury

  • Not able to dig in every soil

  • More investment in manpower

  • Not so efficient digging

  • Difficulty in the underwater digging process

To help the workers dig holes efficiently, drill machines were used. However, it cannot be used in every form of ground and has a high level of percussion. Nevertheless, with advancements in the construction industry, companies have found an alternative to manual digging and drillers - A Hydraulic Auger!

A hydraulic auger is drilling equipment that uses fluid pressure to operate. It is used widely for construction and digging applications such as excavations, shaft sinking, and road work. This drill bit-looking piece of equipment specialises in quickly and efficiently digging holes, as opposed to boring holes with a pile driver.

Benefits of using Hydraulic Augers

Using hydraulic augers for any construction project is always beneficial as:

  • Using a hydraulic auger is easy

  • It digs holes quickly and thus, saves time. This equipment can dig holes in minutes that can take workers hours of hard work

  • It helps workers as they don’t have to manually dig the holes.

  • Hydraulic augers can be used for a variety of projects from mining to underwater operations

  • These augers usually have larger diameter shafts than other drills which means the same tool can be used to drill deeper holes

  • It has a quicker penetration into any soil/ground material such as soft or hard soil, concrete or asphalt

While there are many various models of hydraulic augers, their core functionalities are similar. The digging capacities make them a staple on just about any construction site. Further, their high cost makes renting the most cost-effective option for many construction companies.

This article specifically discusses the guide to use this essential construction machine for winters. Also, know the best hydraulic augers rentals in Missouri to get the highest quality machines for your project.

The basics of Hydraulic Auger

A hydraulic auger is a piece of heavy construction machinery that is used for drilling purposes. It uses the hydraulic pressure for the power to drill the deep holes in any type of ground including solid rock, soil, concrete, or frozen.

It does not handle only the force but also allows the drilling at various speeds that can be altered as per the requirement. It also enables the reversible direction of rotating for the drilling.

It comprises a drive that will enable the application of hydraulic power to the drilling part of the equipment. It is further equipped with a helical screw blade called flighting that helps in boring the surface and directing the removed material. The sturdy drilling part of the augers is called the bit.

There are various types of augers based on the type of digging work to be done. Also, they are often used as an attachment to a heavy construction machine, a tractor, etc.

The guide to digging the grounds in winters with Hydraulic Auger

The overall status of winter grounds for construction jobs

The frozen ground can be more challenging than the hard frozen concrete. However, this applies to the surface with the permafrost crust only. This frozen surface depth is also called the frost line. The soil is warm deeper and not frozen, in fact, it holds an average temperature.

With the further onset of the winters, the depth may increase, however, the digging will meet the soft soil eventually. The National Weather Service’s frost depth reports provide the estimated depth measurements of the frozen soil in terms of inches. The frost line gets deeper with the onset of winter, so it is beneficial to carry out the job as early as possible.

Using the right equipment for the desired job does wonders. This includes hydraulic power systems such as hydraulic hammers, hydraulic rippers, hydraulic augers, etc.

Challenges and Solutions for the frozen ground digging

It is the truth that breaking the frozen layer is tough. The soil auger bit can cut through the ice and dig through several inches. However, the other types of tools that have the best application suitable for breaking through the ice should be utilised.

This makes the job speedy and efficient up to the frost line. These other tools include the ice drill bit, ice augers, post hole auger, and the heavy force with the jackhammer or pickax.

You need to remember that the ice bit is unable to function well in the soil. Also, the soil bit does not work effectively for the frozen ground. They may stop running due to the overload. The bit can break itself and the receiver too.

Also, the dug soil turns back frozen, so you must finish the job with a specific hole all at once to avoid breaking the ice all over again.

Types of Construction Equipment used during Construction

A lot of heavy-duty equipment is used on construction sites. When foundations are necessary, some of the most important pieces you’ll need to include hydraulic augers, vibratory hammers, and lead systems.

Fortunately for construction crews operating in or around Kansas City, Missouri, most of these tools can be rented.

Pile Driving Equipment Machine

The value of renting is multifaceted. For one, there are very specific attachments or types of tools that each play a specific role on the job site, depending on the types of materials that will be driven into the soil to strengthen foundations, but also based on the type of soil you’ll be drilling or driving into.

Instead of purchasing the equipment, you’ll need for each job or soil type, you can rent the tools you’ll need and not need to worry about maintaining or storing all of the different pieces.

If there is a problem on the job site with any tool you’re using, a good heavy-duty rental company should have a large inventory so they can quickly swap out the malfunctioning equipment to keep you on schedule.

One phone call should take care of any issues without having to find and contact a repair company and potentially wait days for a technician to be available to diagnose and fix the problem.

One good example of how renting is better than buying is if you need a hydraulic auger. A hydraulic auger looks a bit like a super-sized drill bit that is used primarily for digging large holes quickly. However, there are four different types of hydraulic auger bits that will most efficiently perform the task needed:

-    Light Duty - Light-duty auger bits have bolted-on teeth and are best for digging in soils that don’t contain a lot of obstructions, such as tree roots or rocks.

-    Heavy-Duty - Heavy-duty auger bits have cast iron heads with driven-in teeth to work in harsher soil conditions, such as those with lots of obstructions or if you’ll be digging into clay or fracturable rock.

-    Tree - Tree auger bits have a wide base at the bottom and taper down to a point at the tip. This helps the auger bit to start with a small hole that increases in diameter as the auger drills into the soil. This is perfect for landscaping projects where you’ll need to plant a lot of trees quickly.

-    Rock - Rock auger bits are the toughest of them all and are specially made for drilling big holes in hard materials like solid rock or concrete.

Vibratory Hammers Rentals in Kansas City MO

Instead of having to buy four different hydraulic auger bits to cover every potential job application, you only need to rent the one you need for the specific job you’re working on at the time.

The same is true if you’ll be driving piles or other materials. You can use a traditional impact hammer that can be driven by hydraulics, diesel fuel, or air compression.

Diesel pile drivers are very popular because they are fuel-efficient and offer exception impact power. However, they can also be very noisy and may not be a good choice for driving piles in heavily populated areas.

In any case, impact hammers are good for driving steel, wood, or pre-cast concrete into difficult soil conditions, especially when dealing with clay or rocks.

On the other hand, if you are driving materials into soft or sandy soils, especially if you need to drive sheeting, caissons, or pipe, you’ll want to use a vibratory hammer also known as a Vibro hammer instead.

Vibrating hammers use a rapid oscillation that travels down the pile to basically liquefy the soil or sand around the pile or structure you’ll be driving, allowing the pile to easily sink into the ground.

When the vibration is turned off, the ground around the pile re-solidifies, holding the pile firmly in place. Vibratory hammers are also smaller and have a number of different mounts, so if you wanted to use one with your current vehicles, you could rent an excavator-mounted hammer.

And speaking of pile driving, there are different options available for the lead systems you’ll use with your impact hammer equipment. You could choose from U-shaped Lead Systems, Offshore Lead Systems, or Fixed Lead Systems, again, depending on the nature of the job you’ll be doing.

Hydraulic Augers Rentals Missouri Kansas City

So, when it comes to construction projects, there are a lot of heavy-duty tools you may need depending on several different factors.

Instead of buying lots of equipment that you may not use or will use infrequently, contact a reputable heavy-duty equipment rental company that can provide you with everything you need, including quick delivery to your construction site.

Summary:

Unless you specialize in only one kind of construction type, you may need to use a lot of different kinds of heavy-duty equipment for different jobs and varying soil types. Instead of buying, maintaining, and storing all of that equipment, it may be far more economically sound to just rent the pieces you need for the duration of each project.
