Choose the right Vibratory Hammer for Your Construction Project

A piling foundation is responsible to take the immense load of the main structure and offering stability to the structure such as buildings, bridges, roads, etc. Depending upon the type of construction, the piling foundation is decided. Further, you will need the ideal piling foundation equipment accordingly. To determine the success and efficiency you must choose the right machines. This includes the suitable type of piles, rigs, drilling, winches, piling hammers, excavators, etc.

The selection includes opting for the right type of vibratory hammer as per your construction project. They play a significant role in the piling foundation. The vibratory hammers or Vibro hammers are used to drive the piles into the grounds to form the piling foundation as per the structure. It provides the huge weight to drive the piles smoothly for the purpose and has taken the place of the traditional types of pile drivers. The advantages of the vibratory hammers include their underwater usage, no loud noises, ease to handle, and lightweight.

They come in different styles and sizes. Also, they differ in terms of the location of the operation, the type of equipment that will be used, and the power source too. You may also need to choose between the purchased vibratory hammers or the rental ones.

This article further discusses the features of different types of vibratory hammers to get an idea about their selection factors. Also, know the leading global supplier of vibratory hammers rentals.

Vibratory Hammer Types and Different Uses for Selection

Features Based on types

  • The vertical vibrations are used to loosen the soil by putting its particles in motion with the crane suspended vibratory hammer.

  • With the connection bracket, the Excavator mounted Vibro hammers functions hydraulically. It is cost-effective and does not require any additional changes to the excavators.

  • Side grip vibratory sheet pile drivers give high performance due to their advanced design. It also functions hydraulically.

Based on Power Source

With the weights and counterweights, the vibratory hammer passes the piles easily into the soil. There are two types in it - electric vibratory hammers and hydraulic vibratory hammers.

The electric type uses a huge electric motor and the hydraulic type utilises the hydraulic motor for rotating the counterweight. A generator is turned in the case of an electric motor through the diesel engine's power unit. For the hydraulic motors, the hydraulic pumps are turned with the diesel engine's power unit.

Hydraulic vibratory hammers are lighter in weight, more powerful, less noisy, and fast. Both these types function on the power unit with the wire attached to it and also the clamps are attached to the pile.

Using Pile Driving Equipment to its Maximum Potential

As per the Global Construction 2030 report, the construction industry worldwide is expected to go up to USD 15.5 trillion by 2030. Also, 57% of this growth is contributed by the USA and two other countries. Thus, the rise in construction activities in the future anticipates the rise in the demand for the products and resultant pile driving equipment market size too. As per the reports, it is huge globally. It was valued at USD 5.08 billion in 2020 and is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 3.6% from 2021 to 2028.

A foundation is required to support the heavy structure to stand and also for the load to be transferred from that structure. The pile foundation serves this purpose. They are columnar or cylindrical structures made of concrete, metal, or steel and these piles are dug into the soil with the help of pile driving equipment machines and techniques associated with the same.

This article discusses the dedicated uses of the specific pile driving equipment and the remedies for how to make the best use of these machines by solving the most common issues with pile driving.

Optimising Pile Driving Equipment

A foundation using pile driving equipment is a cost-effective type of foundation. It is suitable in some specific conditions such as when there are poor soil conditions or compressible soil in the shallow depth.

Also, it is adopted when the area is near the water body, canal, or deep drainage and it is possible to affect the soil. Further, if there are varying loads from heavy structures, or in the case of high groundwater tables or when the foundation trenches cannot be kept dry - this type of foundation is used.

Types and dedicated uses

As per the soil conditions and the required depth of the piles you need to optimise various types of pile driving equipment. The below points discuss different pile driving equipment and the specific areas in which they are used:

  • To drill the pile and to support the hammer, the piling rigs are attached to the crane. Rigs have the tabular substance or the hard box and can be used in different foundations and purposes. Multiple piles can be put in place by just rotating the base machine and placing the leaders of the rigs. Thus, you need not move the whole equipment.

  • As per the size and weight of the piles, you need to make the choice of the piling hammers. Other factors that contribute to the selection are the space on the construction site, cranes, energy efficiency, etc. There are different types of sheet pile hammers discussed below, you need to choose the ideal one depending upon the type of application. The professional pile driving equipment rental can help you with the right one as per your construction project.

  • Hydraulic impact pile hammers offer adjustable stroke, ram weights, and blow-rates to drive different types of piles such as sheet piles, timber piles, etc. This type of sheet hammer can be used optimally for various pile driving operations by placing them in any kind of rig.

  • Vibratory pile hammers use vertical vibrations to drive the sheet piles or pipes. The vibration mechanism and the weight of the hammer drive them into the ground.

  • Other types of piling hammers include drop hammers to place the test piles and single-acting steam for piling in the marine environment. Also, the double-acting hammer is used for rapid blows and pile extraction by breaking rocks. Whereas the diesel pile hammers are used for soft soil conditions.

Apart from the above types of equipment, there are other miscellaneous ones such as winches, pile extractors, jetting equipment, pile frames, etc.

Resolving Issues to make the best use of pile driving equipment

To make the best use of the pile driving equipment systems with optimal changes includes various situations such as misalignment of the piles, movement in previously driven piles with the new ones, dislocating piles, etc. Some of the major ones are as follows:

You need to ensure the perfect driving system and the drivability of the pile that matches the soil conditions for the right number of blows. Their conditions need to meet the requirements for the predicted number of blows depending upon the depth.

Another aspect to consider is the soil resistance, drive system performance, and striking capacity. This is when the piles are driving deeper than the estimation and in such conditions, the restrike capacity needs to be tested.

Soil conditions and internal inspections of the piles are required in case the blow counts come down or change. Also, if there is only a slight change then you may consider the lower capacity in re-strike testing and hammer performance.

The use of different types of Pile Driving Hammer

Pile driving is the most ancient technique of deep foundation construction and has been prevalent for thousands of years. Moreover, the uses of the driven piles and the evolution in the methods are remarkable. Though the core technique remains the same i.e driving piles through pushing force for installation.

Various equipment, machine, parts, components, and power sources have gone through updations and are involved in the process. You can easily get the latest and affordable equipment as per your application requirements from the pile driving equipment rentals in Missouri.

A pile driver is a machine that is used for driving the piles vertically into the ground or soil without excavation. Piles are strong columns made of steel, concrete, wood, etc. There are sheet piles, pipe piles, H-pile, timber, and precast concrete piles. Driving them into a specific area with inappropriate surface or subsurface situations will enable the desired structure formation or will provide support to the buildings.

Pile driving hammers are at the core of the pile driving process or system. Their function is to drive the piles into the soil.  This article discusses different types of uses associated with pile driving hammers.

The features and application of different types of pile driving hammers

Drop/Steam/Air hammers - For all soil conditions

Drop hammers are the most ancient type and are still in use for their simple applications. Steam hammers are said to be industrial power hammers. There are single-acting and double-acting air/steam hammers available with the pile driving equipment rentals in Missouri. They can be used as per the power requirement with varied pressure, frequency, and strokes.

The power source of drop hammers that lifts the ram/piston is steam or compressed air. The pile resides on the bottom side of the cylinder and the hammer is connected to the piston enabling the vertical movement of the hammer within or alongside.

The steam pressure will lift the hammer over the pile and drops it with its release with the help of gravity. The ram above the stroke hits and drives the pile into the soil. The hammer’s weight can vary depending upon the job requirement.

Diesel Pile Hammers - For supporting soil layers

As the name suggests, the power source of the diesel pile hammer is through the huge two-stroke diesel engine. The weight is handled at the ram or piston. Besides, the part that links to the top of the pile is a cylinder.

The cable holding the pile driver raises the impact hammer’s weight and this results in the cylinder’s air extraction and fuel insertion. Moreover, with the quick-release mechanism, the weight is dropped. Also, the fuel gets to the ignition point with the heat generation. This is due to the compression of fuel and air formed from the piston’s weight.

The ignition will drive the weight upwards when the energy of the weight-fall shifts to the pile head and the fresh air is extracted every time the weight rises. The cycle continues in this manner. The closed-end hammers can give 30-50 blows per minute and open-end hammers are capable of 70-80 blows.

The modern diesel hammers are said to be the most essential equipment parts for today’s deep foundation. They come with adjustable fuel pumps to control the stroke and energy. This is highly beneficial in the conditions when the soil formation changes.

Hydraulic impact hammers - For loose soil

Hydraulic hammers are modern, better, and environmentally-friendly alternatives for diesel and air hammers. They are very effective for driving steel pipes, precast concrete, timber piles, beams, etc.

In this hammer type, the pile slides vertically after it is released through the weight placed above the pile, which hits and hammers it into the soil.

Factually, the compression in the surrounding soil due to the driven pile causes higher friction further rising the pile's load-bearing capacity. The Hydraulic impact hammers are suitable in such loose soil conditions due to their special capabilities. They are capable of doing complex jobs in a minimum time period.

Also, the pile driving equipment rentals in Missouri provides different models and versions on rent or sale.

They can create high impact with a relatively low weight of the hammer. Also, they can be equipped with various types of carriers. Moreover, there is a grease port that enables the greasing of demolition tools to save them from wearing or damage due to its void. There are no springs or heavy mounting brackets in these hammers making its operation more reliable, easy, and productive.

Vibratory pile hammers - For loosening the soil

Modern-day vibratory hammers can be operated with the varied static moment and position adjustment to pile or extract sheet piles, H-beams, sand piles, etc. They come in various models with low to high frequency. They are highly beneficial where the surrounding areas must not be disturbed such as old structures.

Vibratory pile hammers use vertical vibrations to get the adjacent soil in motion and this way drive the piles easily into the ground. Their specialty is that they are very lightweight and do not create loud noises. If you are looking to do the underwater jobs, these are operable there too.

You can get the appropriate type as per your application from the vibratory hammer rental. Also, you can rent the other types of hammers depending upon your job requirement.

Explain Pile Driving Hammers and their types

One of the main problems faced by a construction contractor is choosing the right foundation equipment like pile driving hammers. And, when it comes to picking the right pile driving hammer, using a single piece of equipment for various tasks can certainly save money. However, how much room you’ll have to move it around the job site is, of course, another primary concern.

At Hydraulic Power Systems, we offer a full range of pile driving hammers. We can help you identify the most appropriate pile driving hammer to keep your project problem-free.

What is a Pile Driving hammer?

Pile driving hammers are the equipment used to drive piles into the soil and in some cases, underwater to build support for buildings or other structures like dams. Every hammer has a unique strength and working process. For instance, if you’re looking for equipment that works efficiently in the mining industry, a Hydraulic Auger is what you will need.

Different types of Pile Driving Hammer

Hydraulic Power System’s range of pile driving hammers can help your construction team to lower the labor costs and speed up the building process efficiently. Following are the most demanded and robust pile driving equipment on rentals in Missouri:

Vibratory Hammers

A vibratory hammer is used to drive sheet piles, pipes or other components into the soil by vertical vibrations. These hammers are easy to ship and can be used near residential areas without disturbing the people living in the surrounding areas. To keep your workers safe, we can provide radio remotes for operational efficacy from extended distances. These hammers can be used to both drive piles into and extract piles from the ground.

Caisson Hammers

Caisson hammers are useful for bridge pier foundations and dam construction projects. With a 90 degrees turning plate and power pack unit, these hammers drive caissons and then secure them as the mud/dirt/sediment settles cleanly back into place. At Hydraulic Power Systems, we offer 6 caisson hammer models to choose from.

Diesel Hammers

Diesel hammers are used to drive piles into a supporting soil layer. With its power and fuel efficiency, they can be used effectively in a wide range of environments.

Sheeting Hammers

If you’re looking for equipment that pushes or presses piles without using vibrations, you will need sheeting hammers. These hammers are an alternative to vibratory hammers and can effectively drive piles and/or caissons into the silt, mud, or other types of environments. All of our 7 models of sheeting hammers are suitable for the static pressing and extracting of sheet piles.

Excavator Mounted Hammers

With ergonomic design and powerful performance, the excavator-mounted hammers are useful to drive piles when the workspace is minimal in size or otherwise restricted. How does Vibratory Pile Driving Equipment work?

With the development and innovation in Vibro technology, vibratory hammers have become an exemplary way to drive or extract piles quickly and easily. This tool is useful in driving piles into the ground when constructing foundations for things like buildings, bridges, roads, marine docks, walls, or railways.

If you’re a builder or constructor, a Vibro hammer for sheet pile driving will always be a crucial part of your set of construction equipment. Also, they are useful if you are constructing a building or bridge in urban areas and downtowns. The reason is, a vibratory hammer creates less noise as compared to impact hammers.

vibratory pile driving equipment

How does a Vibro hammer work?

A vibratory hammer is a specialized piece of equipment that applies vibration to change the soil structures so that the hammer can drive in the pile using its own weight. Its spinning counterweight processing produces a vibration that causes a pile to “cut” into the soil below.

While a traditional pile driver works like a nail and a hammer, a vibratory pile driving equipment works more like a sword. The high-velocity vibration causes the soil to give way, allowing the pile to slip effortlessly into the soil.

The vibratory piling tool transfers vertical vibrations to the pile through the hydraulic clamp. This helps to transfer the vibration to the soil which reduces the friction between the pile and the soil. This enables the pile to be driven or extracted with less force. The pile is pressed into the soil by a sequence of the vibrator’s weight and the centrifugal force it produces.

Types of Construction Equipment used during Construction

A lot of heavy-duty equipment is used on construction sites. When foundations are necessary, some of the most important pieces you’ll need to include hydraulic augers, vibratory hammers, and lead systems.

Fortunately for construction crews operating in or around Kansas City, Missouri, most of these tools can be rented.

Pile Driving Equipment Machine

The value of renting is multifaceted. For one, there are very specific attachments or types of tools that each play a specific role on the job site, depending on the types of materials that will be driven into the soil to strengthen foundations, but also based on the type of soil you’ll be drilling or driving into.

Instead of purchasing the equipment, you’ll need for each job or soil type, you can rent the tools you’ll need and not need to worry about maintaining or storing all of the different pieces.

If there is a problem on the job site with any tool you’re using, a good heavy-duty rental company should have a large inventory so they can quickly swap out the malfunctioning equipment to keep you on schedule.

One phone call should take care of any issues without having to find and contact a repair company and potentially wait days for a technician to be available to diagnose and fix the problem.

One good example of how renting is better than buying is if you need a hydraulic auger. A hydraulic auger looks a bit like a super-sized drill bit that is used primarily for digging large holes quickly. However, there are four different types of hydraulic auger bits that will most efficiently perform the task needed:

-    Light Duty - Light-duty auger bits have bolted-on teeth and are best for digging in soils that don’t contain a lot of obstructions, such as tree roots or rocks.

-    Heavy-Duty - Heavy-duty auger bits have cast iron heads with driven-in teeth to work in harsher soil conditions, such as those with lots of obstructions or if you’ll be digging into clay or fracturable rock.

-    Tree - Tree auger bits have a wide base at the bottom and taper down to a point at the tip. This helps the auger bit to start with a small hole that increases in diameter as the auger drills into the soil. This is perfect for landscaping projects where you’ll need to plant a lot of trees quickly.

-    Rock - Rock auger bits are the toughest of them all and are specially made for drilling big holes in hard materials like solid rock or concrete.

Vibratory Hammers Rentals in Kansas City MO

Instead of having to buy four different hydraulic auger bits to cover every potential job application, you only need to rent the one you need for the specific job you’re working on at the time.

The same is true if you’ll be driving piles or other materials. You can use a traditional impact hammer that can be driven by hydraulics, diesel fuel, or air compression.

Diesel pile drivers are very popular because they are fuel-efficient and offer exception impact power. However, they can also be very noisy and may not be a good choice for driving piles in heavily populated areas.

In any case, impact hammers are good for driving steel, wood, or pre-cast concrete into difficult soil conditions, especially when dealing with clay or rocks.

On the other hand, if you are driving materials into soft or sandy soils, especially if you need to drive sheeting, caissons, or pipe, you’ll want to use a vibratory hammer also known as a Vibro hammer instead.

Vibrating hammers use a rapid oscillation that travels down the pile to basically liquefy the soil or sand around the pile or structure you’ll be driving, allowing the pile to easily sink into the ground.

When the vibration is turned off, the ground around the pile re-solidifies, holding the pile firmly in place. Vibratory hammers are also smaller and have a number of different mounts, so if you wanted to use one with your current vehicles, you could rent an excavator-mounted hammer.

And speaking of pile driving, there are different options available for the lead systems you’ll use with your impact hammer equipment. You could choose from U-shaped Lead Systems, Offshore Lead Systems, or Fixed Lead Systems, again, depending on the nature of the job you’ll be doing.

Hydraulic Augers Rentals Missouri Kansas City

So, when it comes to construction projects, there are a lot of heavy-duty tools you may need depending on several different factors.

Instead of buying lots of equipment that you may not use or will use infrequently, contact a reputable heavy-duty equipment rental company that can provide you with everything you need, including quick delivery to your construction site.

Summary:

Unless you specialize in only one kind of construction type, you may need to use a lot of different kinds of heavy-duty equipment for different jobs and varying soil types. Instead of buying, maintaining, and storing all of that equipment, it may be far more economically sound to just rent the pieces you need for the duration of each project.

Things you must know when buying or renting Pile Driving Equipment

When it comes to a need for having pile driving equipment on your Jobsite, the first question you need to consider is whether you should purchase the equipment or rent it.

There are several factors to consider that can help you make the decision:

- Frequency How often throughout any given year will you be using the equipment? If you’re going to be using it frequently and on several different jobs, it may be most cost-effective to buy.

If you only need a pile drive for a one-off job or you may only need to drive (or excavate) piles a couple of times in a year’s span, the best option may be to rent.

- Costs There are other costs to equipment other than the purchase or rental price. For example, you’ll need to store and maintain the equipment.

If you do not have an excavator or crane to operate the pile driver, you’ll need to purchase or rent that as well. And if that’s the case, you’ll probably need to hire a skilled rigger and equipment operator when the pile driver is in use.

- Piles Another consideration is the type of soils you’ll be driving piles into and if you’ll be driving straight steel, timber, or precast concrete piles or pipe versus sinking a caisson or driving steel sheets.

For driving piles into rock or you may need a diesel-powered impact driver. For sandy conditions or when sinking things other than straight piles, a vibratory hammer might be a better choice. Vibratory hammers are also a better choice in most cases if you’ll be working near other building foundations because the vibration pattern can be targeted to not disturb areas outside of your pile driving zone.

If you’re not sure what kind of soils you’ll be working with on various job sites, it might be a better option to rent, so you won’t need to purchase a variety of pile driver types.

- Connectors There are different kinds of connectors available for the various vehicles that can operate pile drivers, especially if you’ll be using a vibratory hammer with your excavator.

You’ll need to make sure that the connectors and the equipment all match and can work efficiently together.

- Vibratory Dampeners Vibrations from pile driving equipment can put a lot of wear and tear on the vehicle supporting it, as well as the operator within the vehicle.

Buying or renting, you want to make sure that the equipment you’re using comes with dampeners that provide exceptional protection for your equipment and people, while still doing a stellar job at driving your piles.

One other thing to think about in the buying or renting decision-making process is what will happen if your pile driver needs repair. Obviously, pile drivers are built to take a beating and will provide years of quality service when purchased new, assuming the equipment is well cared for and maintained.

But if something does happen that takes your pile driver out of service, do you have a qualified technician who can quickly fix the problem for you, or will you be dead in the water until a service professional is available?

If you need help in making the decision, or if you’re ready to move forward now, contact HPSI for all your pile driving equipment rental or sales needs in Kansas City.
